Milford Sound - Experience

Today we have had a Milford Sound experience. Actually the correct name should have been Fjord instead of Sound as it was carved out by a glacier and then refilled by sea, whereas sound is typically eroded by water. Anyways it is one of the wettest spots on Earth, having 220 rainy days per year, in total up to 7-9m of water. So we were very lucky to see it on a sunny day. The views of the Sound and the mountains surrounding it are so spectacular. Due to massive rains the mountains have hundreds of waterfalls with a few big ones, which are twice-thrice as large as the Niagara Falls. Bowen Waterfall (162m tall) besides being the largest fall also supplies all the drinking water to the Milford Sound area as well as the electricity. The drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound is quite a spectacular trip through the mountains and the rain forest. A lot of movie directors have used the sceneries for their movies (The Lord of the Rings, some Westerns, the new Alien movie).
